Hiking

Hiking has been my favorite forms of entertainment and Acadia did have some nice trails even though we only hiked on a few of them. This particular day was rainy and foggy and of course there were rocky areas along the trail. However we occasionally had some nice views of the ocean. When hiking in the New England area the trails are rocky and continue straight up the mountain whereas hiking in the west as in Colorado, Montana, etc. the trails have switchbacks making it easier to negotiate the trail.

Another day we followed a trail along the coast and saw the Queen Mary II which was in Bar Harbor for the day. That was a nice leisurely walk with very little traffic.

On another day in another part of the part of the Park we were able to drive close to this lighthouse but since it is still occupied this was as close as we could get.

Acadia is known for the 45 or so miles of carriage trails that Rockefeller built in the early 1900's. It took many years to complete them all but they are great for walking, bicycling, dog walking, horseback riding. There is also an area where you can take carriage rides. During our stay we have walked all but maybe 2 miles of these trails. The only animals (other than dogs) that we encountered was a couple of deer one day. We have more deer than we care to see at home in Texas. On several occasions we did see wild turkeys early in the morning while walking near our campground.
