Louisbourg

We are back in Nova Scotia and spent several days in the town of Louisbourg which is where the French established a fort and a pretty sizable town.  The government excavated a third of this area and decided to rebuild part of this historical area.  So this was a trip back to the 1760's and what life was like here in the New World.

The staff was dressed for that time period and the guard at the gate asked where people were from.  Those from the New England states were Yankees and we (from Texas) were Spaniards (not Yankees).  Since this was originally a French settlement there were lots of folks who spoke French.  The British did attack and took over the Fort, then lost it to the French and later the British used the same tactics and defeated the French once again.

Of course they had a bakery and we decided to sample the bread.  I chose the whole grain bread that the lower classes could afford.  They actually were healthier because of this.

We enjoyed another evening of songs and dance at the local Playhouse.  During intermission they served tea and oatcakes.  Now my traveling buddy decided that he liked them (I had already tasted them at a Tim Horton's) so I am on a mission to perfect the recipes I have found on the internet.  By the way when you order tea in Canada it will come as hot tea not iced.
