Gander/St. John's

Our next stop was in Gander for a few days and we used this opportunity to drive to St. John's for the day.  It was several hours but we decided it was better to not take the RV and just spend a long day in the capital city of Newfoundland.  The fog rolled in but finally cleared that afternoon so we could have a better look at the harbour.

We toured Signal Hill which was a perfect spot to defend the harbour of St. John's.  There were even American soldiers stationed here during WWII.  We walked along the trails on the hill and then rode the trolley bus around the downtown area.

A lady who lived in St. John's told us that they do get lots of snow and the cars which are shipped there via Halifax, Nova Scotia only last approximately 5 years due to erosion from the salt used on the roads.  She also commented that they are told the winds are just high winds at 75 mph.  Isn't that close to what are considered hurricane winds elsewhere?

From the city we drove to Cape Race which was the first place to receive and send messages concerning the sinking of the Titanic. For vessels bound to North America from England, the cape was often their first landfall, so it is not surprising that a lighthouse, fog alarm, telegraph station, and wireless station were all established there. I am standing near the most eastern spot in North America.
