Cow Head

We are in our third week on Newfoundland.  This past week was a bit relaxing as we stayed in one campground for a whole 7 days while enjoying this view.  We did some catch up cleaning and laundry during a rainy day or two.  Sure wish we could get some of this rain in Texas.  The streams here are full of bubbling water and everything is very green and lush.  We are staying in the town of Cow Head which is home to the Gros Morne National Park Theatre Company that draws folks from all over the island to their performances.  One was named Vinyl with songs from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s but they were all by “Newfie” songwriters and singers so they were unrecognizable to us.  However they had us all singing.

We did some light hiking across this causeway to a small village that the fishermen stayed in during the summer fishing season before returning to the mainland for the winter.  There is an old lighthouse that dates to the early 1800’s. Sadly there is very little fishing these days as the cod are slowly disappearing.

On another day we walked 18 holes to play golf on a lovely golf course that was practically deserted.  A fellow camper informed us that a wealthy person owns it and that it will probably never be profitable.  Apparently there was a large center here that burned down and went into receivership.  It was just reopened this summer.

We get updates on the ferry problems and that latest is that they have been running them almost around the clock to keep up with the demand from the one drop off point here in Newfoundland.  A couple from New Brunswick needed to get back home to take care of a sick friend so finally got a booking to leave at 5:00 am which meant they needed to be in line for the ferry at 3:00 am.  In order to keep your reservation one needs to be in line two hours prior to departure.  We should be okay as our reservation is for the 19th at 11:45 am.
