Prince Edward Island

We drove over the 8 mile bridge to Prince Edward Island over a week ago and discovered how beautiful it is.  There are rollings hills and lot of farms in the western end with Charlottetown in the middle and lots of open space to the east.  Charlottetown is a lovely harbour city where cruise ships dock.  We enjoyed a day walking through unique shops and some lovely cathedrals.  A scallop lunch that day was pretty good.

Cavendish on the northern shores is full of all things Anne of Green Gables related.  This book was actually published in the early 1900's but remains a popular book and historical place to visit.  We enjoyed learning about the author and her childhood home which was an inspiration for her books.

We have done some serious walking and decided to rent bikes one day.  There is a wonderful hike/bike trail across the island from the west coast to the east coast.  I understand a serious fast biker could ride it in 17 hours but they do have bike trips spread out over 4 days.

This trail was originally a train track that has been taken out and is now maintained as a trail.  Reminds me of the wonderful bike trails they have in Iowa.  Speaking of Iowa, PEI has a lot of small farms and grow mostly potatoes.  We see cows grazing in the grass - no feed lots have been spotted.  (Yeah)

One more picture for this post of a day we walked along the beach.  A man we encountered told us that the water was some of the warmest north of Florida but I was skeptical.  Later we struck up a conversation with a guy from Ottawa and his sister who has been living in New Zealand and was visiting.  We have been to Ottawa now I would really like to make a trip to Australia and New Zealand.  Since the brother took off his shoes and walked into the water I decided that I needed to try it out also.  It was surprisingly warm and I might try doing a little swimming next week.
