On the last Friday of the month of June is Engineer’s Day in Sault Ste. Marie and they allow the public to walk out on the locks and tour the beautiful buildings where the offices are.
We arrived when they first opened and were able to see a ship come through on each lock. One large ship threw boxes of ice cream bars over for the kids although we did see some adults that didn’t follow directions and ate them themselves. It was fun talking to the guys as they passed through. We were this close to the ship that was in the lock.
We also were able to tour a power plant that was built in 1912 and still in good working condition today.
This year was the 50th anniversary of the opening of the International Bridge between the two sister cities and for the past 26 years they have closed it on the last Saturday in June to allow people to walk from the US side to the Canadian side. It was a three mile walk and Type A hubby stepped out in start of the group and we walked it in 43 minutes. So we were on the second bus that took us back over the bridge.
They also had a tugboat parade and this was my favorite – a party barge complete with a band and porta potties.
Fireworks were set off at the opening of the Engineer’s Day weekend on Friday evening and then again on the Sunday July, 1st for Canada Day.

How cool is that! You guys had a Canada Day celebration followed by our Fourth of July celebration. We were back from California so we were happy to just stay home and cook our own food. Great pics!
