Apparently there are people out there reading my blog. So I apologize for not posting sooner. This summer’s trip will not go down as one of my favorites so maybe that is why I am not inclined to post pictures and thoughts. The first part of the trip was great visiting and spending time with family and renewing acquaintances with American cousins.
Here are some of the things we have done while staying near Acadia National Park which is where we will be till mid-October.
We have done much walking (resting) along the carriage trails of which there are around 45 miles
There is a wonderful bus system that takes you most places around Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. One day we got off and walked ½ mile to a lighthouse on the coast.
Another Saturday we attended a Blueberry Festival in a small town near here and enjoyed blueberry pie, etc.
We had a tour of a blueberry farm and Frank helped pick after a short demonstration. They are just beginning to use machinery to pick them on this farm but they hire mostly migrant workers. Totally different farming that we are used to in Iowa.
One fine sunny day we took a ferry boat to Cranberry Island and Little Cranberry Island. During the winter there are 45 residents on the larger Island but during the summer there are 200 some residents.
We stopped at the smaller island and walked along the beach on the Atlantic side with some friends that came along with us that day. We met them in Sun City years ago and for the past 5 or so years they have become full time RVers.
We keep in touch and occasionally our paths cross as they have this summer. They are staying in Bar Harbor for the summer and recommended the campground where we are both staying.
Another hike we enjoyed was around Jordan Pond where they serve lunch with their specialty being popovers. There is usually a long wait and we thought they were a bit pricey so we hopped back on the bus for home.
During low tide you can walk from the town of Bar Harbor across this area to Bar Island.
The view from a hill on the Island is spectacular.
Along the way we joined the “kids” that were looking at starfish.
